Analytics and business intelligence (ABI) platforms enable less technical users, including business personnel, to model, analyze, explore, share and manage data, collaborate and Share findings.
Consecutive Years In The Gartner Magic Quadrant For Qlik
The presence of major cloud ERP and CRM application vendors also factors into ABI platform selection considerations. On the one hand, cloud-led procurement inevitably creates concerns about lock-in and unforeseen costs of the data and analytics mix. Cloud service providers, on the other hand, recognize the importance of openness in their software stacks and the growing importance of a “multi-cloud” approach, where organizations run applications in or across multiple cloud offerings such as Databricks and Snowflake.
According to Gartner, ABI platform capabilities include the following 12 key capabilities, which have been updated to reflect market changes, differentiation and areas of customer need:
Gartner removed three key capabilities from its evaluation criteria: security, natural language generation (NLG; incorporating data storytelling), and cloud analytics (which will henceforth be considered a go-to-market strategy). One of the security sub-criteria regarding authorization granularity (such as row-based security) has been moved to Enterprise Reporting capabilities.

Tableau’s products focus primarily on vision-based exploration, enabling business users to access, prepare, analyze and present findings from data. CRM Analytics (formerly Tableau CRM) provides enhanced analytics capabilities for analysts and citizen data scientists. In 2022, Tableau strengthened its enhanced consumer vision to deliver contextual insights through deeper integration with the Salesforce Data Cloud.
Microsoft’s primary ABI platform, Power BI, has significant market presence and momentum through Microsoft 365, Azure and Teams integration, flexible pricing, well-above-average features, and an ambitious product roadmap.
Looker by Google Cloud is a cloud-architected ABI platform that provides highly managed analytics, including self-service visualizations and dashboards, and a code-first semantic modeling layer based on LookML. Looker’s developer-centric analytics platform provides a version-controlled collaboration framework for building internal BI and enabling customers to build applications.
SAP Analytics Cloud is a cloud-native multi-tenant user platform with extensive capabilities for cross-data visualization, reporting and enhanced analytics. It unifies analytics and enterprise planning to create an end-to-end process from insights to business action. Low-code and high-level coding capabilities for analytics apps provide composable analytics apps for lines of business. It enhances data integration and modeling capabilities, especially in leveraging the full context of SAP data and application ecosystems.
A Case For Self Service Business Intelligence (ssbi)
Qlik’s primary product is Qlik Sense Enterprise SaaS, which includes Qlik Sense, Qlik AutoML, and Qlik Application Automation. Qlik is a cloud-agnostic vendor with top-level partnerships with all three major cloud providers (AWS, Microsoft and Google), as well as partnerships with Databricks and Snowflake. Yesterday, Gartner released the 2018 Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence. MQ research in BI has been around for nearly a decade. It is a reference document for buyers of business intelligence technology.
On the surface, it doesn’t seem like much has changed…but if you look closer, you’ll see that some of the biggest changes in the history of the Magic Quadrant have just happened…
For the first time in three years, Gartner has removed a large number of vendors from its quadrants. In 2016 and 2017, the company had 24 suppliers in its quadrant. This year, the Magic Quadrant lists only 20 vendors…a 16% reduction in the quadrant. Has the market shrunk? !
Not exactly: the market has evolved…and actually evolved in a fairly predictable way. The “self-service BI” trend drove the industry’s annual growth of 60% in 2015, but it also brought some unintended consequences: enterprises purchased a large number of BI tools. Some bring value. Some don’t. The result: In 2017, the market was estimated to have grown just 10%, and Gartner now expects it to grow 8% by 2021.
