Self-service Business Intelligence Tools: Gartner Magic Quadrant’s Function In Supplier Choice

Self-service Business Intelligence Tools: Gartner Magic Quadrant’s Function In Supplier Choice – It’s that time of year (12 how the month goes!) Gartner announced the latest version of the Magic Quadrant for their Business Intelligence tools, or this year they call it the “Modern Analytics and BI Platform”.

I’m always interested in which provider sends the link to the Magic Quadrant first to my inbox, this year the SiSense team, but Qlik just took 1 hour and 10 minutes.

So in my previous years approach, SiSense is the winner and you can get a copy of Gartner 2019 Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platform from their website here:  http://info.sisense.com/CXY00a0rR07O0mwa2C0DE05

I also congratulate SiSense for just asking me some MVP questions to get the report, well done!.

If you’re interested in comparing the changes, check out my blog post about last year’s Magic Quadrant here:

So the big legacy set players are moving down and to the left and the newer players are moving to the top right. No surprises there.

And we are seeing new players expanding their product range through acquisitions or new product modules. Tableau Data Prep and Qliks acquisition of Podium are two recent examples.

Gartner Technology Insight For Ongoing Modernization Of Analytics And Business Intelligence Platforms

If history were to repeat itself, we would start to see big software suite players begin to acquire top-matching companies, pretending to want to integrate those features into their suites, but those products and features will disappear over time making one wonder if they are actually buying those companies to eliminate competition and give customers less choice.

Last year, I blogged that Gartner was saying that Augmented Intelligence and Natural Language are the new blacks. This year it is quite similar to the view:

“Image-driven data discovery is also disruptive to traditional BI, with a third wave of disruptions emerging in the form of augmented analytics, with machine learning (ML) generating insights into increasingly large amounts of data. Augmented analytics also includes natural language processing (NLP) as a way of querying data and generating narratives to interpret drivers and graphics. Vendors that have enhanced analytics as a differentiator are better able to charge higher prices for their products.”

They aim by 2020 that these will start to be easily adopted, what I’ve seen is a lot of poster vendors selling these, but very few markets accepting them (in New Zealand at least). There are companies like  Trifacta  and  Waterline Data  that have Augmented Intelligence at their core by suggesting to users what they can do next based on the data’s profile and the global understanding of what the crowd has done with similar data. And there’s no doubt that there are plenty of “stealth” startups that seem to be the new black coming in the buzzing world of AI hype.

As Power Bi Aces Gartner’s New Magic Quadrant, What’s The Story Behind Microsoft’s Success?

Gartner has a number of forecast indicators that allow us to see if the 2020 goal will be achieved.

“By 2020, augmented analytics will be a key driver in new purchases of analytics and business intelligence, data science and machine learning platforms, and embedded analytics.

By 2020, 50% of analytic queries will be generated through search, natural language processing, or speech, or will be automatically generated.

By 2020, organizations that provide users with access to curated portfolios of internal and external data will derive twice as much business value from their analytics investments as those that don’t.

Self Service Bi

By 2020, the number of data and analytics professionals in business units will triple the proportion of professionals in IT departments, which will force companies to rethink their organizational models and skill sets.

By 2021, natural language processing and conversational analytics will drive analytics and business intelligence adoption rates from 35% of employees to more than 50%, including new classes of users, especially office workers.”

I look forward to my blog post about the 202 Magic Quadrant next year, or possibly 2021.

The focus of the Magic Quadrant has changed over time as the market moves from BI Suites to Data Discovery tools. Gartner’s current definition of a market is:

Gartner’s Mqs And G2 Grids ’21 Highlights Of Analytics & Business Intelligence (abi) And Data Science & Machine Learning (dsml) Platforms

“Modern business intelligence and analytics (BI) platforms are characterized by easy-to-use tools that support the full analytical workflow — from data preparation and ingest to visual discovery and insight generation. They differ most from traditional BI platforms in that they do not require significant IT staff involvement to predefine data models or store data in a traditional data warehouse (see “Technology Insights for Modern Analytics and Business Intelligence Platforms”). The focus is on self-service and agility.”

When I go to the supermarket checkout and go to the counter with someone doing it all for me (what  Eckerson  calls Silver Service) or I go to the counter to scan items myself (what Eckerson calls self-service), it’s important that I don’t need any technical expertise to serve myself. But with the latest and greatest in BI tools, while you no longer need an IT professional to do the task for you, you still need the high technical prowess to handle both the challenging tools and data that always brings us.

So I welcome the day when Augmented Intelligence and Natural Language allow me to ask a question just ask a question about my data and get an answer as easily as I can scan my groceries at checkout.

It seems a lot of people think that ChatBots is the answer to this (hence the title image) and it may be right. But I do not believe it.

Magic Quadrant For Analytics & Business Intelligence Platforms

I believe we need a different paradigm that starts with working (models, approaches, methods, valuable practices, what you want to call it) and supporting technology that way, as we move towards using collected user behavior data (what BI over BI says!) Something I’ll personally be working to incorporate in 2019.

I am sure I blogged years ago about 5 things that BI will offer in the near future and SearchBI is one of them. I found this blog from 2012 https://bi-2-0-series-ibi-where-are-you/ but it looks like I treated this blog as a backlog and never distributed the series. I recall the days when we were trying to integrate the yellow Google search engine into a BI tool (I thought it was SAS Web Report Studio or Oracle Discoverer at the time). It’s good to see that after 7 years, we’re about to be able to use the search feature in our BI tools, which everyone thought about. Yesterday, Gartner published the 2018 Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence. MQ for BI research has been around for almost a decade. This is a reference for Business Intelligence technology buyers.

At face value, not much seems to have changed…BUT, if you take a closer look, you’ll notice that some of the biggest changes in the history of the Magic Quadrant have just happened…

For the first time in 3 years, Gartner removed a significant number of suppliers from its quadrant. There were 24 vendors in the company’s quadrant in 2016 and 2017. This year, the Magic Quadrant listed only 20… that’s a 16% drop in the quadrant. Is the market shrinking?!

Microsoft Positioned As A Leader In The Gartner 2021 Magic Quadrant For Analytics And Business Intelligence Platforms

Not exactly: the market has evolved… and indeed in a fairly predictable way. Take a look at our 3-year movement breakdown below: we see a pretty consistent story, e.g. the big gets bigger, some visionaries have been absorbed (or disappeared) and some ‘trendsetters’ have graduated. More exactly:

You’ll find copies of the Magic Quadrant on several vendor websites, and we’re sure your team is looking forward to perusing over 60 pages of documentation. Before doing so, however, we recommend that they draw their attention to some of the “planning assumptions” highlighted on the first page of the document. Special:

We believe Gartner is working on an important theme here: Business Intelligence is Corporate Value. The industry’s “self-service BI,” the industry trend that drove 60% year-over-year growth in 2015, has had a number of unintended consequences: businesses have bought a lot of BI tools. Some bring value. Some are not. Corollary: in 2017, the market grew only an estimated 10% and Gartner now expects the market to grow 8% through 2021.

This Magic Quadrant is supposed to be published on February 16th according to Gartner’s website. We can only guess that the reason why it took a few more weeks is because of some radical new changes that happened in this year’s release.

Tellius Named A Visionary In The Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ For Analytics & Business Intelligence Platforms 2 Years Running

Some of the biggest companies in the tech industry were excluded from this year’s report: Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) are beginning to build increasing influence in the space. Both are capable of visualization. Surprisingly, they received only a few mentions throughout the report: Amazon was mentioned eight times. Google is mentioned only 4 times…

It’s hard to point out the past three years and predict exactly what the next three years will look like. However, we hope that our 3-year motion analysis will help you make more informed choices for your organization. In addition to the table, here are a few additional considerations:

Now, as we explained in the MQ Analytics webinar (record available here), remember that the criterion
