On the surface, not much seems to have changed… BUT, if you take a closer look, you’ll notice that some of the biggest changes in the history of the Magic Quadrant have just occurred…

For the first time in 3 years, Gartner has removed a significant number of sellers from its dial. In 2016 and 2017, the firm had 24 vendors in its quarter. This year, the Magic Quadrant lists only 20 vendors… that’s a 16% quarter-on-quarter reduction. Has the market shrunk?

Not quite: the market has evolved… and actually quite predictably. Take a look at our 3-year movement analysis chart below: we see a pretty consistent story, e.g. The greats are growing, some visionaries have been absorbed (or disappeared), and a few “trend setters” have graduated. More precise:

You’ll find copies of the Magic Quadrant on some vendors’ sites, and we’re sure your team is looking forward to the 60+ pages of documentation. Before doing so, however, we suggest they turn their attention to some of the “planning assumptions” highlighted on the first page of the document. Especially:

Gartner Magic Quadrant For Analytics And Business Intelligence Platforms

We believe Gartner is focusing on an important issue here: Business Intelligence is about Business Value. “Self-service BI,” the trend that drove the industry to grow 60% in 2015, had some undesirable consequences: businesses bought a lot of BI tools. Some added value. Some did not. The result: In 2017, the market grew by an estimated 10%, and Gartner now expects 8% growth through 2021.

This Magic Quadrant was supposed to be released on February 16, according to Gartner’s site. We can only speculate that it took a few extra weeks because of some radical new changes that took place in this year’s edition.

Some of the tech industry’s biggest players were not included in this year’s report: Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) are starting to make a growing impact in the space. Both have visualization capabilities. Surprisingly, it is mentioned only a few times throughout the report: Amazon is mentioned 8 times. Google is only mentioned 4 times…

It’s hard to point to the last three years and predict exactly what the next three will be like. But we hope our 3-year motion analysis chart will help you make more logical choices for your organization. In addition to the table, here are a few additional considerations:

Now, as we explained in our MQ analysis webinar (registration available here), keep in mind that the criteria change over time. Movement is a factor in many things: seller capabilities, as well as Gartner’s methodology for each year.
