Self-service Business Intelligence Tools: Gartner Magic Quadrant’s Effect On Market Patterns – For more than 10 years, Gartner has published its famous Magic Quadrant for Analytics and Business Intelligence Platforms, and 2023 is no exception. Over the years, both Salesforce’s Tableau and Microsoft’s Power BI have consistently demonstrated good performance and strong capabilities in the Executive Quadrant. Tableau has always scored high and Microsoft has done a great job of being ahead of Tableau. Not only the result of fast development cycles and the regular addition of new features, but also through redefining the criteria behind these annual Magic Quadrants.
Below, I summarize Gartner’s market definition and overview, critical platform capabilities, evaluation criteria, and summarize the strengths and caveats of the following vendors:

Magic Quadrant For Analytics & Business Intelligence Platforms
Analytics and Business Intelligence (ABI) platforms enable less technical users, including business people, to model, analyze, explore, share and manage data, and to collaborate and share results enabled by IT and augmented by artificial intelligence (AI).
The presence of major cloud ERP and CRM application providers also influences ABI’s platform selection considerations. On the one hand, cloud-based sourcing creates inevitable concerns about data and analytics portfolio lock-in and unforeseen costs. On the other hand, cloud providers recognize the importance of openness in their software stacks and the growing importance of multi-cloud approaches, where organizations run applications in and across multiple cloud offerings such as Databricks and Snowflake.
As you might expect, one vendor dominates the market in terms of user adoption – Microsoft. The tremendous growth of Microsoft Power BI has continued, largely due to the bundling of this product with Office 365 (at the E5 license level) at a significantly lower price and easy to install through the Windows Store. However, like the openness and portability of the platform, these should not be the only considerations when choosing an ABI platform, as the overview of the strengths and weaknesses of selected vendors below shows.
Gartner’s ABI platform functionality includes the following 12 critical capabilities, updated to reflect areas of market change, differentiation and customer demand:
Lucky Number 7: Pyramid Lands On Gartner’s Mq For Abi Platforms
Gartner removed three critical capabilities from the evaluation criteria: security, natural language generation (NLG; deployed in data storytelling), and cloud analytics (which will henceforth be considered a go-to-market strategy). And one of the security sub-criteria regarding authorization granularity (such as row-based security) has been moved to the enterprise reporting function.
Tableau’s products are primarily focused on visual exploration, enabling business users to access, prepare, analyze, and present findings in their data. CRM Analytics, formerly Tableau CRM, provides advanced analytics capabilities for analysts and citizen data scientists. In 2022, Tableau strengthened its advanced consumer insights to provide contextual insights with deeper integration with Salesforce Data Cloud.
Microsoft’s primary ABI platform, Power BI, has tremendous market reach and momentum through integration with Microsoft 365, Azure, and Teams, flexible pricing, well-above-average functionality, and an ambitious product roadmap.
Google Cloud’s Looker is an ABI platform with a cloud-native architecture that provides tightly managed analytics, including self-service visualizations and dashboards, and a code-first semantic modeling layer based on LookML. Looker’s developer-centric analytics platform provides a version-controlled collaboration framework for building internal BI as well as enabling application creation for customers.
Customer Self Service (css): What & How To Do It Right
SAP Analytics Cloud is a cloud-based, multi-tenant platform with a wide range of capabilities for data visualization, reporting and advanced analytics. It combines analytics and enterprise planning to create end-to-end processes from insight to business. The low-code and advanced coding capabilities of analytics applications provide buildable analytics applications for lines of business. It enhanced data integration and modeling capabilities, particularly in leveraging the full context of SAP’s data and application ecosystems.
Qlik’s core product is Qlik Sense Enterprise SaaS, which includes Qlik Sense, Qlik AutoML and Qlik Application Automation. Qlik is a cloud-agnostic vendor and has top-tier partnerships with all three major cloud providers (AWS, Microsoft, and Google), as well as partnerships with Databricks and Snowflake. I’m pleased to share that today, for the second time in the Leaders Quadrant of Gartner’s 2017 Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms, Microsoft has been placed in the far right corner of Gartner’s 2017 Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms for completeness of vision – the 10th year in a row that Microsoft has been in a leadership position.
We are humbled by this recognition for the innovation we delivered with Microsoft Power BI last year, including
Growth on both the vision axis and the implementation axis since the 2016 report. But more importantly, we’re encouraged by the progress we’ve made as a community toward the ambitious goal that was set when Power BI became generally available just a short time ago, in July 2015: to bring BI to more people than ever before. , across all organizational roles and disciplines.
Consecutive Years In The Gartner Magic Quadrant For Qlik
Power BI is a modern business intelligence solution that you can bet on. We will continue to deliver innovation and value accurately and quickly. The mantra that drives us is “five minutes of wow” – our relentless focus enables a user to sign up for Power BI in five seconds and get business value from the service in five minutes. Customers around the world understand this vision and are taking advantage of the promise of self-service BI, making it a reality en masse.
This customer-centric approach extends to Power BI’s standard development and delivery cycles. Since general availability, we’ve delivered an innovation pipeline with weekly service updates and monthly updates to the Power BI Desktop authoring tool. This frequency is driven by valuable feedback from the community—more than 200,000 active community participants who have contributed more than 6,000 ideas since July 2015 that have directly influenced our product development. We listen, evaluate and deliver for our community, and we’re proud of it. We could not have reached these heights without the support and feedback of our loyal user base.
With all of this exciting innovation and incredible industry recognition, we’re keeping our foot on the gas to continue to deliver on our promise of ‘five minutes to sleep’ and bring the value of data insights to even more users. Thank you for being part of our journey. We look forward to breaking more boundaries and pushing even further in data visualization and exploration.
If you’re already a fan or want to learn more, I invite you to join us at the second annual Microsoft Data Insights Summit this June in Seattle. Microsoft Remains “Up and Right” in Gartner’s New Magic Quadrant for Analytics and Business Intelligence Platforms Competitors have actually moved down and left. We spoke with Microsoft’s Amir Netz, the “father” of Power BI, to get his take on the product’s success.
The new Gartner Magic Quadrant for Analytics and Business Intelligence (BI) is out, and Microsoft is back in the “Leaders” quadrant (see figure above). In fact, according to Microsoft, this is the 14th year in a row as a BI leader. Although Microsoft is in almost the same place as last year, its closest competitors have actually lost ground. The point of thought has entered the Visionary Quadrant. Qlik, while it has increased along the “completeness of vision” axis, it has slipped in “execution”. Meanwhile, Tableau retreated in both dimensions.
This gives Microsoft and its Power BI a huge competitive edge. And while it’s tempting to look at Microsoft as some behemoth that wins because of its might and industry dominance, I can tell you from personal experience that this wasn’t always the case. I have worked with the Microsoft BI stack since its inception in the late 90s and served on the company’s BI Partner Advisory Council (PAC) from approximately 2005-2011. At the time, Microsoft had the dominant BI server platform. SQL Server Analysis Services characterized its capabilities on the application and self-service data visualization side of mostly 15 years of ebb and flow.
So what changed? What did Microsoft get right? And how did it capitalize on its real achievements on the BI platform side of the enterprise? I had an hour to get an overview from the Microsoft side
