Self-service Business Intelligence Tools: Gartner Magic Quadrant Moving Companies As Well As Shakers For 2023 – Yesterday, Gartner published its 2018 Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence. MQ research for BI has been around for almost a decade. This is a reference document for buyers of Business Intelligence technology.
At first glance, it may seem that not much has changed…BUT, if you take a closer look, you will see that some of the biggest changes in the history of the Magic Quadrant have recently occurred…
Self-service Business Intelligence Tools: Gartner Magic Quadrant Moving Companies As Well As Shakers For 2023
For the first time in 3 years, Gartner removed a large number of vendors from its quadrant. There were 24 vendors in the enterprise quadrant in 2016 and 2017. This year, the Magic Quadrant only lists 20 vendors…that’s a 16% reduction in the quadrant. Is the market shrinking?!
Gartner’s Magic Quadrant For Analytics And Business Intelligence Platforms 2023 (and Back To 2015)
Not really: the market has evolved….and actually in a pretty predictable way. Take a look at our 3 year move analysis table below: we see a fairly consistent story, e.g. the big ones get bigger, some visionaries get absorbed (or disappear) and a few ‘trendsetters’ graduate. More correctly:
You’ll find copies of the Magic Quadrant on several vendor sites and we’re sure your team will look forward to exploring the more than 60 page document. However, before they do so, we suggest that they direct their attention to some of the “planning assumptions” highlighted on the first page of the document. In particular:
We believe Gartner addresses an important theme here: Business Intelligence is all about Business Value. “Self-service BI”, a trend that drove the industry’s 60% YOY growth in 2015 created some unintended consequences: companies are buying a lot of BI tools. Some carry value. Some don’t. The consequence: in 2017, the market only grew by about 10% and Gartner now estimates it will grow by 8% through 2021.
This Magic Quadrant should be published on February 16th according to the Gartner website. We can only guess that the reason it took the extra few weeks is because of some of the radical new changes that have taken place in this year’s edition.
Self Service Analytics: A New Approach To Modern Data Management
Some of the tech industry’s biggest players were omitted from this year’s report: Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) are starting to build increasing influence in the space. Both have visualization abilities. Surprisingly, they get very few mentions throughout the report: Amazon is mentioned 8 times. Google is only mentioned 4 times…
It’s hard to point to the last three years and predict exactly what the next three years will be like. However, we hope that our 3-year movement analysis table will help you make a more reasonable choice for your organization. In addition to the table, here are some additional considerations:
Now, as we explained in our MQ analysis webinar (recording available here), remember that criteria change over time. Movement is a factor of many things: vendor capabilities but also Gartner’s methodology each year.

Tableau has always scored high and Microsoft has done an excellent job positioning itself ahead of Tableau. Not only the result of rapid development cycles and regular additions of new functionality, but also through redefining the criteria that underlie this annual Magic Quadrant.
Below I will summarize the Gartner Market Definition and Overview, Key Platform Capabilities, Evaluation Criteria and summarize the Strengths and Cautions of the following vendors:
