Self-service Business Intelligence: Comprehending The Gartner Magic Quadrant Yard – Gartner Analytics has been publishing their famous Magic Quadrant for business intelligence platforms for over 10 years now, and 2023 is no exception. Over time, Salesforce’s Tableau and Microsoft’s Power BI have shown consistent performance and strong capabilities in the Leaders quadrant. Tableau has always scored high and has maintained a better position than Microsoft Tableau. Not only the result of faster development cycles, but also of constantly adding new functionality, but also through redefinitions of the criteria that underpin these annual Magic Quadrants.

Below I will review Gartner’s market definition and overview, critical platform capabilities, and evaluation criteria and summarize the following vendors’ strengths and pitfalls:

A Challenger In The 2022 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ For Itsm

Analytics and Business Intelligence (ABI) platforms enable technology users, including business people, to model, analyze, explore, manipulate data, collaborate and share IT-enabled and artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced findings.

The presence of leading cloud ERP and CRM application providers is also an influencing consideration for choosing an ABI platform. On the one hand, cloud-led sourcing creates inevitable concerns about lock-in of data and analytics portfolios and unforeseen costs. Cloud service providers, on the other hand, recognize the importance of openness in their software stacks and the growing importance of “multicloud” approaches, whereby organizations run applications on and across multiple cloud offerings such as Databricks and Snowflake.

As one might expect, especially in the Netherlands, one vendor – Microsoft – dominates the market in terms of user adoption. However, these should not be the only considerations in choosing an ABI platform, as should platform openness and portability, as should a review of the strengths and weaknesses of selected vendors’ offerings.

Gartner removed three critical capabilities from their evaluation criteria: security, natural language generation (NLG; rolled into data storytelling), and cloud analytics (which would be considered a go-to-market strategy). Tableau’s products focus primarily on visual-based exploration that enables business users to access, prepare, analyze, and present findings in their data. CRM Analytics, formerly Tableau CRM, provides enhanced analytics capabilities for analysts and citizen data scientists. In 2022, Tableau strengthened its expanded customer vision to deliver contextual insights with deep integration with the Salesforce Data Cloud.

Power BI, Microsoft’s primary ABI platform, has massive market reach and momentum with Microsoft 365, Azure and Teams integration, flexible pricing, above-average functionality, and an ambitious product roadmap.

Looker by Google Cloud is a cloud-architected ABI platform that offers highly controlled analytics, including self-service visualizations and dashboards, and a code-first semantic modeling layer based on LookML. Looker’s developer-focused analytics platform provides a version-controlled, collaborative framework that helps build internal BI and enables customers to build applications.

SAP Analytics Cloud is a cloud-native multitenant platform with advanced capabilities across data visualization, reporting, and augmented analytics. It unifies analytics and enterprise planning to build end-to-end processes from insights to business operations. It has improved data integration and modeling capabilities, particularly in leveraging the full context of the SAP data and application ecosystems.

Qlik is a cloud-agnostic vendor and has high-level partnerships with each of the three primary cloud service providers (AWS, Microsoft, and Google), along with partnerships with Databricks and Snowflake. Self-service analytics is a form of business intelligence (BI) in which line-of-business professionals, with minimal IT support, are empowered and encouraged to conduct inquiries and generate reports on their own. Self-service analytics often feature simple-to-use BI tools with basic analytics capabilities and a basic data model that is simplified or scaled down for ease of understanding and direct data access.
