I’ve been working with data in some form for about 20 years, including working as a business analyst, data warehouse developer/analyst, business intelligence analyst, data engineer, and senior lecturer in data analytics.
What Is Business Intelligence? Bi Meaning And Applications
I originally started as a GA teaching SQL workshops at the Atlanta campus, then grew into other data-related workshops/bootcamps and became an instructor for Data Analytics Online and Atlanta. When I was offered a role teaching courses in my field for GA, I was excited to share my knowledge with others interested in learning about this industry.
Business intelligence (BI) combines strategy, process, and technology around data. BI includes common features such as data mining, process analytics, data visualization and analysis, performance management, predictive/prescriptive analytics, reporting, and dashboards. BI may have members such as visualization and data analysts, data engineers, business intelligence analysts, and data scientists.
Can you give an example of a problem/question that a BI analyst might be asked to solve during their work?
The responsibilities of a business intelligence analyst vary from company to company, but the most frequently asked questions typically revolve around KPIs. How is the company performing? What are your sales metrics? BI analysts take a top-down approach to answering these questions. For example, let’s say our company’s sales have decreased. BI analysts are tasked with finding out whether the decline is coming from a specific region, a specific product/service, a specific sales representative, etc.
How Businesses Are Using Artificial Intelligence In 2023
BI analysts typically ensure that data is ready for use at the source and collaborate with other roles such as database administrators and data engineers. Data analysts work more closely with customers (internal and external) to meet their data needs and also collaborate with BI analysts. These roles are often mixed in practice. Anyone looking to get into BI must have both technical and non-technical knowledge and skills. This list is not exhaustive, but highlights some points that may be helpful to analysts.
You don’t need to have a technical background, but you must be willing to learn the technical aspects of the job. This will help you ask the right questions to understand your business needs. Technical knowledge is helpful in this field because it can give you insight into what you can offer. As you move deeper from the data analyst role into the BI analyst role and the mix that occurs between the two, additional skills such as SQL will be needed. It’s a good idea for anyone in a data-driven role to have a solid knowledge of visualization tools like Excel, SQL, and Tableau.

Before the bootcamp, how did you become a BI analyst in general? Is business intelligence a skill that can be learned in a bootcamp? why?
I personally did not get a data degree, but rather learned on the job and actually taught myself SQL throughout my career. I ended up getting a master’s degree in Computer Information Systems, but that’s not necessary for a career in business intelligence! In the General Assembly Data Analysis Bootcamp, we not only teach you the tools, but we also teach you how to formulate hypotheses and work through the empirical process. Students build an Excel project, a SQL project, and finally a Tableau project.
You can learn various tools and techniques for business intelligence from various programs such as general or micromasters offered in various universities. There are “boot camp programs”, but they are usually sessions of one day or more. There are also entire degree programs in data analytics.
