If you’re still managing and analyzing your data manually… stop. Bots are smart enough to do it for you now, and you have better things to do with your time, like using AI-generated insights from your data to make big, impactful decisions.
Business Intelligence Software Examples
Business intelligence (BI) software uses APIs, automation, artificial intelligence, and other tools to simplify the process of collecting, organizing, analyzing, and visualizing data. It takes the data and basically does everything for you except the actual decision making.
Gartner’s Magic Quadrant 2022
There are hundreds of platforms that market themselves as BI or BI-adjacent tools, but not all of them help you get actionable insights from your data while remaining accessible to businesses of all sizes. I spent several weeks testing dozens of BI tools, and based on my research and time testing the platforms, these eight stood out from the crowd.
Our best program summaries are written by people who have spent most of their careers using, testing, and writing about software. Unless otherwise stated, we spend dozens of hours researching and testing apps, using each app as it was intended to be used, and evaluating it based on the criteria we set for the category. do. We never get paid by any program or to link to any site in our articles—we value our readers’ trust in us to provide authentic reviews of the categories and programs we review. For more details on our process, read our full breakdown of how we choose apps to feature on the blog.
To test these BI tools, I created a user account with each platform, imported sample data, and tested critical features such as data source linking, data linking, visualization and dashboard building, and AI-generated insights.
With the help of the above criteria, some extensive research into these programs, and my insights from testing them, here are my picks for the eight best business intelligence software solutions.
Grafana For Business Intelligence: How Grafana Labs Uses Dashboards For More Than Observability Data
Datapine’s ranking alone was enough for me to guess that it would earn a spot on this list, and testing it only confirmed my hypothesis.
I was particularly impressed with the platform’s Smart Insights tab. Along with annotated charts that point to these insights, you’re greeted with a series of written notes about your data. They’re categorized by category, with tabs for growth and forecasting, value drivers, key segments, outliers, correlations, and even interactive what-if scenarios that let you see how certain factors would affect results if they changed. are separated
I also found the app’s dashboards to be very flexible (and almost…fun?). You can drag charts anywhere on the dashboard, and they are highly customizable. Customize fonts, colors, gradients, shadows, titles and subtitles, and even mark up your dashboard with hundreds of fun icons. Some visualizations, including maps, are interactive, allowing you to zoom in on specific areas to get a closer look at your data.
When creating a new data visualization, you can implement various conditional formatting options. For example, you can give meaning to colors, gradients, and more to reflect a quality such as fixed values or limits.
Business Intelligence Reporting: Everything You Need To Know
The app also integrates artificial intelligence and smart prediction. You can enable alerts that detect anomalies in your data and how you’re tracking against your KPIs and notify you of any changes. You can even customize the charts to predict how your data will fare over time.
There are even more amazing features, including dashboard sharing with colleagues, automated reports to send on a specific schedule, and more—but you get the picture. datapine is a premium BI program that will almost certainly cover all your bases.
Admittedly, as a great all-in-one option, datapine is quite expensive compared to many other BI software options. Before you drop your cash, confirm that you need all of its features.
If you’re a solopreneur looking for a free BI tool to help you manage and analyze your data, Zoho Analytics has you covered. With its personal plan, you can download the platform for free on your local server and get access to some powerful features that many BI tools charge for – conversational AI, unlimited reports, predictive analytics and more. .
What Is Business Intelligence? Definition And Faqs
Not everyone can (or wants to) be a BI expert. For newbies, Zoho Analytics is also one of the easiest options to choose. The app offers simple demo videos to help you get up and running, and the interface is simple enough to navigate without much of a learning curve.
I’ve used Zoho’s Zia AI assistant through other apps in its suite of tools, but it was still the most impressive part of the app for me. Not only did Zia create a formula to manipulate my data exactly how I needed it, but he could do predictive analytics based on natural language. I asked it what my income would be at a certain point in time, and the forecast showed it in writing and graphically.
Zoho products are notorious for having a rather outdated interface, but in the case of BI software, it doesn’t really matter. Most platforms in this category haven’t quite embraced the sleek, modern mid-2020s user interface, so Zoho fits the bill perfectly.
While it integrates seamlessly with other Zoho apps, if you can’t find the integration you need in the Zoho suite, Zoho Analytics integrates with and opens the door to tons of automations. Funnel leads from your ad tool directly into Zoho, or connect it to your favorite spreadsheet app, so your new data is imported automatically.
Business Intelligence Tools You Need To Know
Domo shines as a great BI tool all around, to the point where it was difficult to decide which one deserved the best. Overall, I found this to be an incredibly strong option for all your data management needs.
For example, it supports more than any other platform I tested, with over 440 data connectors.
Once you connect your data to the platform, managing it is as simple as that. Its Magic ETL tool has a drag-and-drop interface and allows you to prepare your data for analysis, create relationships in your data, and filter data automatically without any SQL knowledge. Do it. With the help of the program’s Beast Mode feature, you can also perform calculations with your data.
Aside from these weird name manipulation and data management features, I was surprised at how fast the app loaded. Whether I opened a sample dataset to look at raw data or created a new dashboard with custom insights, loading took seconds at most.
Reasons To Use Microsoft Power Bi
As someone who has used Microsoft Word and Excel for over a decade, Microsoft Power BI was eerily familiar. The user interface is designed very similarly to other Microsoft products – similar icons, menu placement, and everything in between. I found this very helpful when using the program, as BI software in general has a steep learning curve.
It’s not just the layout that makes this app great for those experienced with Microsoft’s suite of tools. Integrations with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams are all just a click or two away in the top menu bar. It lets you import data from Excel spreadsheets into Power BI, export data visualizations from Power BI to PowerPoint, and more.
Additionally, it integrates natively with Power Automate, Microsoft’s platform for connecting and automating hundreds of applications (including nearly all Microsoft applications). Like many other Microsoft programs, the platform offers both desktop and web-based versions.
Aside from all these Microsoft integration wins, I found the app to be really intuitive. Without doing any manual data modeling or connection mapping, the platform automatically recognized that my two datasets were connected. Once that connection is established, a change to one automatically affects the other.
What Is Business Intelligence (bi)?
I also appreciate the app’s Query Editor, which tracks all historical data changes.
