If you’re still manually managing and analyzing your data…stop. Robots are now smart enough to do this for you, and all you have to do is make the most of your time, like using AI-generated insights from your data to make big, bottom-line decisions.
Business Intelligence Software
Business Intelligence (BI) software uses APIs, automation, AI, and other tools to simplify the process of gathering, organizing, analyzing, and visualizing data. It takes the data and does everything for you except make the actual decision.
Top Rated Business Intelligence Software
There are hundreds of platforms marketing themselves as BI or BI-adjacent tools, but not all of them help you get actionable insights from your data while being accessible to businesses of all sizes. I spent several weeks testing dozens of BI tools, and based on my research and time spent testing the platforms, these eight stood out among the rest.
Our roundup of the best apps is written by people who have spent most of their careers using, testing, and writing software. Unless otherwise stated, we spend dozens of hours researching and testing apps, using each app for its intended use and evaluating it against the criteria we set for the category. We are never paid to post our articles from any app or link to any site — we value the trust of our readers to provide honest reviews of the categories and apps we cover. To learn more about our process, read our blog for details on how we select featured apps.
To test these business intelligence tools, I created an account with each platform by importing sample data and testing key features such as data source linking, dataset linking, visualization and dashboarding, and AI-powered insights.
Using the above criteria, some extensive research into these applications, and my insights from testing them, here are my picks for the eight best business intelligence software solutions.
How To Choose The Best Bi Tool
Datapine’s ratings alone were enough to suspect it would make the list, and testing it confirmed my hunch.
I was particularly impressed by the platform’s Smart Insights tab. You’ll be greeted with a series of written snippets about your data, along with annotated charts that answer these insights. They are divided by category, with tabs for growth and forecast, value drivers, key segments, deviations, correlations and even interactive case scenarios that allow you to see how certain factors will affect the results if they change.
I also found the app’s dashboards to be very flexible (and almost… interesting?). Charts can be dragged anywhere on the dashboard and are highly customizable. Customize fonts, colors, gradients, shadows, titles, and subtitles, and even customize your dashboard with hundreds of fun icons. Some visualizations, including maps, offer interactivity, allowing you to zoom in on specific areas to get a closer look at your data.
When creating a new data visualization, you can implement various conditional formatting options. For example, colors, gradients, etc. that represent quality such as values or fixed limits. you can assign a meaning.
Business Intelligence Software Trends For 2024: Predictions You Should Be Thinking About
The software also integrates AI and intelligent prediction. You can add alerts that recognize data anomalies and how you’re tracking KPIs, notifying you of any changes. You can customize the charts to predict what your data will look like over time.
Share dashboards with colleagues, automate reports to be sent on a specific schedule, and more. There are great features like , but you get the picture. datapine is a premium BI application that covers all your bases.
Admittedly, as a very comprehensive premium option, datapine comes at a steep price compared to many other BI software options. Confirm that you need all its features before withdrawing cash.
If you’re a sole proprietor looking for a free BI tool to help you manage and analyze your data, Zoho Analytics has you covered. With its Personal plan, you can download the platform to your local server for free and get access to some powerful features that most BI tools charge — conversational AI, unlimited reports, predictive analytics, and more.
How Business Intelligence Can Fuel Your Efforts
Not everyone can be (or want to be) a BI expert. For the newcomers in the group, Zoho Analytics is one of the easiest options to choose. It offers simple walkthroughs and demonstration videos to help you get up and running, and the interface is simple enough to navigate without a learning curve.
I’ve used Zia, Zoho’s AI assistant, with other apps in its suite of tools, but this was the most impressive part of the app for me. Zia was able to not only create a formula to process my data exactly how I needed it, but also perform predictive analytics based on natural language. I asked him what my income would be at a certain point in time and he did a written and graphical breakdown of the forecast.
Zoho products are known for having a relatively dated interface, but in the case of BI software, that doesn’t matter. Most platforms in this category haven’t quite nailed down the sleek, modern interface of the mid-2020s, so Zoho fits right in.
While it integrates seamlessly with other Zoho applications, if you can’t find the integration you need in the Zoho suite, it integrates with Zoho Analytics to open up tons of automation. Direct your ad tool directly to Zoho or add it to your preferred spreadsheet application so that newly entered data is automatically imported.
What Is Business Intelligence? Strategies & Best Practices
Domo shines all around as a great BI tool, so it was hard to decide which advantage it deserved. Overall, I’ve found this to be an incredibly reliable option for all of my data management needs.
First, it supports more data connectors than any other platform I’ve tested, more than 440. And with its own app store, you can find almost all the APIs you need to get things done.
Once you add your data to the platform, it becomes easy to manage. Its Magic ETL tool offers a drag-and-drop interface and allows you to prepare data for analysis, establish relationships in data, and automate data filtering without SQL knowledge. You can also perform calculations with data using the app’s Beast Mode feature.
In addition to these amazingly named data management and manipulation features, I was surprised at how quickly the app loaded. Whether I opened a sample dataset to view raw data or created a new dashboard with custom insights, it took a few seconds at most to load.
The Rise Of Business Intelligence In Healthcare
As someone who has used Microsoft Word and Excel for over a decade, Microsoft Power BI felt very familiar. The interface is very similar to other Microsoft products — similar icons, menu placement, and everything in between. I found this very helpful when using the application, as BI software usually has a steep learning curve.
It’s not just the layout that makes this app great for people with experience with the Microsoft toolset. Integration with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Teams is done with a couple of clicks in the top menu bar. This includes importing data from Excel spreadsheets into Power BI, exporting data visualizations from Power BI to PowerPoint, and more. allows.
Additionally, the app is integrated with Power Automate, Microsoft’s platform for connecting and automating hundreds of software applications (including virtually all Microsoft applications). Like many other Microsoft applications, the platform offers desktop and web-based versions.
Aside from all the wins for this Microsoft integration, I found the app to be really intuitive. Without having to manually model the data or create a connection diagram, the platform automatically recognized that my two datasets were connected. Once this connection was established, changing one automatically affected the other.

I also appreciated the application’s query editor, which tracks all historical changes to the data.
