But, what is business intelligence and what is required in this position?
In our Career Insights series, we regularly provide an in-depth analysis of different types of jobs, usually particularly dynamic and suitable for a freelancer.
Today, we will focus on Business Intelligence Consultants, also known as BI Consultants. First, we’ll do a short job description, and then look at the most valuable skills for a BI consultant.
Bachelor Of Business Intelligence
Business Intelligence is a technology-driven process that collects, analyzes and interprets data in an easy-to-understand visual manner. It’s about the big picture – measuring processes and their results inside and outside the company. These days, collecting data is easier than ever and there are really many tools that enable easy visualization. Business intelligence consultants are hot ware right now given the big data trend that has pushed many businesses to do more BI analysis.
The role of a BI consultant is to use all available technology to help companies capture, refine and prepare data from various sources (internal and external) that are interesting for their decision making.
Through this data and considering the BI consultant must understand the context in which the business is run, a business intelligence expert can provide ideas to improve business processes. With the data available, they can predict future events and developments.
For this reason, BI consultants are critical to planning, strategic and analytical decisions in a company. Thanks to BI tools and their analysis, new business lines can be planned, costs optimized or company growth improved.
Successful Business Intelligence Examples
Tools are critical to BI analysis, and we’ll get to them in a second. But they only get you so far if you don’t understand where the data is coming from and what it represents. So first, you need some background in statistics. “A fool with a tool is still a fool” is something I’ve heard a couple of times regarding BI, and it couldn’t be more true.
Statistics can be a difficult field to break into, but if you have a background in math or science, you may already know the basics without realizing it.
There are many different tools you can use as a BI consultant. The first layer, and the most complex, involves looking at data sets and understanding what they contain. There are many tools for that, but two stand out:
– R is a very popular tool used by statisticians, scientists and consultants. There are tons of tutorials and scripts to help you out, many of which are built into R itself. Even better, this tool is open source and completely free. R comes with an amazing community ready to help its new members. However, it has a lot of functions and it can be frustrating at first if you are not used to a tool like this.

– SPSS is similar to R, allowing you to analyze data in predictable ways. Its advantages are that it is more popular in the business world and more user-friendly. However, this comes at a cost – literally. SPSS is an expensive tool, but it can be worth it, especially since many companies will license it to you.
You can visualize with R and SPSS, but there are better tools for that. Depending on whether you want to focus on SAP (and stick with it exclusively), there are two main alternatives:
– Tabulation has become very synonymous with data analysis and visualization. It is a great tool used worldwide due to its great combination of simplicity and power. If you have data already checked, cleaned and ready to analyze, feeding it into a table will give you almost instant results.
– QlikView is similar to Tableau in that it also provides ways to visualize data, but there are some key differences. It has an integrated BI platform and comes with demos, training manuals and several tutorials that help you quickly understand some of the advanced functions. However, it is not as intuitive as the table at first.

As we mentioned in the introduction, BI consultants are in high demand right now. In addition, there are many skills required to be a successful BI consultant. Statistical knowledge and proper use of tools and way of communicating is a much needed skill. Because of that, you can expect a very good salary.
According to Glassdoor, the national annual average in the USA is around USD 84,000, with the potential to reach USD 120,000 with the right skills.
As always with salary numbers, remember that they vary greatly between countries and sometimes cities. So if you want to get a better idea of what you can earn as a BI consultant, visit those two sites and search with your preferred position.
Power Bi Career Opportunities And Job Roles
BI consulting is an excellent field for freelancers. Many small and mid-sized companies do not have their own BI consultants on board or prefer to hire one for specific projects. Because of this, almost all companies work with external consultants. And while there are firms that specialize in providing them, freelancers are in a better position to find clients if they have the right skills and experience to back it up.
