Business Intelligence (BI) analysts play a critical role in any business, working to capitalize on data and translate it into insights for the company to make informed decisions. We spoke to two of our business intelligence consultants to find out about their experiences working in BI and what they’ve learned along the way.

The Business Intelligence Analyst is responsible for leveraging data for the business and identifying opportunities for improvement, identifying trends, as well as identifying potential problems and recommending solutions. Their work is aimed at improving efficiency, increasing productivity and bringing benefits to the business.
How To Become A Business Intelligence Analyst
Traditionally, to become a Business Intelligence analyst, you first need a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline; this could be, for example, in business information systems, computer science or data science. Then you will need the relevant qualifications and experience before starting your career.
However, at FDM we offer you the opportunity to start your career as a BI analyst without the need for work experience or necessarily a technical degree. Kiran: My current position is Business Intelligence Developer and I am part of a three-person development team. My main responsibilities involve reporting, especially PowerBI and SSRS. My day-to-day activities include project work, reporting and maintenance and understanding user requirements. To do this, I need to talk to business users about our data warehouse and figure out how we can use it to deliver on their reporting needs. In addition, my role also includes business analysis work, which has helped me further expand my skills.

Izhan: I currently work for a global bank as a business analyst as part of their Cloud Finance program and my role focuses on compliance. I am responsible for the compliance of the data transferred to the cloud with the relevant authorities and also manage several dashboards on the side.
Kieran: My role requires me to work on different projects and interact with stakeholders in different roles and departments on a daily basis, which I really enjoy. I’m currently running PowerBI training for users who want to implement this technology in their roles, and it feels great to take on that responsibility. I was given time to focus on my professional development and take responsibility for my future.
Ijan: A major part of my role is to work with a team of developers based in India. My favorite thing is connecting with different teams around the world and talking to new and inspiring people every day.
Kieran: Recently, I was involved in a project to implement a new support system for engineers and everyone else who works during the planned summer break. We are working under a tight deadline and on top of that, one of the team members who was important to this project has left, which makes our work much more difficult. We had to adapt quickly as a team and divide the work between us. However, despite the challenges, we were able to get the system up and running in time before the outage works.

Izhan: The biggest challenge for me was starting this role remotely from home during the pandemic. The new virtual onboarding process was a new experience for both the client and me. However, good communication, regular video calls with other team members and support from my colleagues helped me overcome this challenge.
Kiran: I completed my undergraduate degree in Geology and was interested in working with a client in the energy sector. Researching this field, especially the long-term goals of organizations, really helped me during the interview process and allowed me to secure the role at the right company.
Izhan: I studied financial economics at City University of London. Although I had no previous experience in BI, I always wanted a career in this field as it would allow me to combine the data and analytical skills I learned at university with my passion for IT.
Kieran: The professional skills module at FDM Academy was very useful as it reinforced the skills I learned earlier at university such as communication and presentation skills. It also showed me how important it is to be confident and show up. FDM also gave me the opportunity to get interviews with large companies, which is usually very difficult for recent graduates to achieve.

Izhan: The training helped me understand the commercial sector. It polished my teamwork skills and gave me the experience I needed in technology to secure my current role.
Kiran: My first piece of advice would be to get a deep understanding of your industry and apply yourself to become a subject matter expert. It may be difficult at first but also very rewarding as it will definitely set you up for a successful career. Another tip is to be yourself during the interview. Your future employers are looking for someone who fits their team dynamic, so relax and be yourself.
Izhan: Keep up with the latest trends in technology. In the world we live in, technology often informs other sectors, especially finance. Looking at technology from a different perspective helps us understand how IT can be used to achieve great things.
